報(bào)告簡(jiǎn)介: Agroecosystems on the Canadian Prairies face many complex challenges due to anthropogenic factors. In this presentation, I will highlight some of these challenges and discuss some of the strategies that the Land Remediation Lab at the University of Manitoba has been exploring and implementing to mitigate the impacts. Anthropogenic impacts come in different forms, including land disturbances caused by the extraction of mineral and energy resources (and ancillary activities associated with these), accidental and intentional dispersal of contaminants (including those of emerging concern) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and excessive use of organic and mineral fertilizers. Physical disturbances require land reclamation, revegetation and restoration to equivalent capability, while chemical contamination may require the removal, containment, or other attenuation measures to protect human and environmental health. Even the build-up of essential and seemingly benign fertilizer nutrients in agricultural soils may call for remedial measures to protect vulnerable environs. Finding solutions to these formidable challenges call for strong collaborations among multidisciplinary research teams, industry, different levels of government, and the public.
報(bào)告人介紹:Francis Zvomuya is a Professor and Head of the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba. He holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Minnesota, an M.Sc. from the University of Reading (England), and a B.Sc. from the University of Zimbabwe. Before joining the University of Manitoba in 2008, Francis worked as a research associate at the University of Minnesota and as a visiting fellow and term scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, AB. His research interests are centered around land degradation and remediation and include nutrient management, beneficial utilization of agricultural and industrial by-products, land reclamation, remediation of contaminated sites, antibiotics in the environment, and statistical modeling. Francis has authored or co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and has supervised more than 20 PhD and MSc students and several postdoctoral fellows and research associates. He teaches soil science courses and graduate statistics in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Environmental Quality and has previously served on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Soil Science as an Associate Editor, an Editor, and an Editor-in-Chief. He has also served on the International Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Biocontrol Science & Technology.
